Hands up those who’ve ridden the Lions Train. The iconic Surf Coast ride emerged from its winter hibernation at Sunday’s first Cowrie Market of the season, with kids young and old quick to line up.
Lions volunteer Dennis McGuffie has been involved with the train since the club acquired it from a local school 12 years ago.
Through the Cowrie market and private events, Dennis says the train earns the club about $5000 each year, which goes into the pool for distribution to a range of community projects supported by Lions. The club also offers the popular attraction free for local kinder events.
“We enjoy seeing the kids getting out and having ride and a good time, so we’re happy to do it,” Dennis says of the crew who manage the train’s outings. He says four volunteers are involved at each event, including one driver and one conductor to make sure passengers stay safe.
Thank you to the Lions Club train volunteers who put a big smile on little faces.
The Torquay Lions are always looking for new members – especially some younger volunteers. If you think Lions could be your gig, or you simply want to find out more, visit http://torquay.vic.lions.org.au/joinnow. From those I’ve met, you’d be hard-pressed to find a friendlier bunch!
