Coffee and Kids playgroup’s popular Christmas Workshop is on again next week, with Uniting Church volunteers hosting a swag of children’s activities to get families in the festive spirit.
Catering to pre-school and primary aged children, the annual event includes afternoon tea, Christmas stories, carol singing, festive craft and a family sausage sizzle.
Organiser Heather Jackman says while regular playgroup members would have first dibs, the workshop could cater to up to 60 children.
“We’ll be setting up a Christmas tree and inviting people to place a gift of non-perishable food items for donation to Uniting Care,” Heather says.
Heather was among the volunteers to set up the Coffee and Kids playgroup about eight years ago. The group meets in the church hall each Thursday from 9:30am-11am.
“I’d just finished teaching and was wondering what I could do and thought I could offer my skills to set up a playgroup,” she recalls.
“I really wanted to set up a supportive and friendly group.”
She says many of the people attending the weekly group have family overseas, including several who are au pairs working in the local area and looking for social connection.
Heather says while she and a roster of about 10 “granny” volunteers, established and run the sessions, it is the members of the group who have made it such a special place.
She says the sessions, which have no religious element, are geared towards pre-schoolers, with playtime and morning tea provided for a gold coin donation to cover costs.
